Tutorial #01 - Double Pic

There was a request for a tutorial, so I come with one for my pretty much favourite technique. S’my first time making one, please tell me if it was any help or unclear or such. This was made with Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0, which means it's almost definitely compatible with other Photoshop programs, though with PSP I couldn't tell you...

Here’s the icon we’re making today, folks!

Now, every icon needs a base picture, right? Here’s ours!

That’s too big. Pick a place to be your focus in the icon; I chose Bakura’s face because it seemed to carry the most emotion. Depending on which direction you want your icon to be laid out [horizontal duplicate or vertical duplicate] crop your base picture so one side is definitely larger.

This base has been auto-levelled, auto-contrasted, had its shadows and highlights adjusted, its contrast and brightness adjusted AND had the colours tweaked. I do this with all my bases.

Next, pick out a part of the icon you want to be central focus. I picked Bakura’s eye and his cheek in the dirt. Cut it out using the Rectangular Marquee tool, with no feather settings and paste it to its own layer. It should be quite small…

Now arrange them on your icon so you think they look good. They shouldn't be too close together or too far apart. but there's really no right or wrong way to do it. Don't feel you need to use the whole image. Here's how mine turned out placed:

Make sure you're working on a 100x100 space! I've found that using a light gray background, like #BDBEC5 helps later on when you're applying the textures, so I've got that on there.

Now you're going to duplicate each of your bases three times. This can get a bit confusing, so please bear with me. From the TOP-MOST layer to the BOTTOM-MOST, your settings and effects should be something like this:

SOFT LIGHT, Gaussian Blur at 0.6, Opacity 100%
OVERLAY, Saturation -100, Opacity 100%
NORMAL, Opacity 70%
NORMAL, Motion Blurred 15 pixels at 0 degrees and 90 degrees [2 seperate actions], Opacity 100%

When you're finished they should look something like this:

Then [and here's something I picked up reading tutorials by hobbit_hunter] add a layer of dark blue and set it to exclusion on a low opacity. It isn't very visible, but I've found it helps our effects to adhere to the icon more evenly. Speaking of which, time for some textures!

[I'm not sure who this one's by, but it's someone on my User Info... if you know please tell me so I can credit more appropriately!]

Place this above your Exclusion Layer and set it to Overlay. This brightens up the icon and also adds some interesting colour in the top-left corner.

It's no where near ready yet, so we're going to add another texture, by the same creator as the previous one:

I didn't like it facing that way, so I flipped it horizontally. I put this in directly underneath the Exclusion layer, and set it to Soft Light at 40% opacity.

Our final textures is this one, made [I believe] by dearest:

Set this to Hard Light at 35% opacity and put it below the previous texture. Here's how our icon looks now!

So we look at this, and we decide that the lowest part of the icon and the top-right corner seem pretty bare. I plucked a bit of red from the left-hand corner and made a lovely blur in our empty space, and add a tiny text brush to the bottom. This goes below your last texture, set to Normal at 50% opacity.

I didn't think the text in the bottom left bit quite covered it, so I got this picture I saved from a link in playthedamncard a while ago, cropped it and resized it, then stuck it in there underneath my blur and text layer, settings Normal and opacity at 100%. I added a one pixel black border and it was finished!

Remember, this tutorial is meant to help you find ways to improve your icon-making skills. Please don't copy it texture for texture, effect for effect. For one, it might not work well on your icon! ^;^ For another, that wouldn't really be the point of the tutorial. ^.^

As I said before, trial and error. I didn't pick those textures on my first try. I had to sift through quite a few to find what looked good. Don't be afraid to share your creations! Hope this was helpful!
